This Week’s Workshop: Embracing The OTHER Job Market…Which Companies are in YOUR OTHER Market? Thursday, January 17th @ 9AM at The Egg and I Restaurant (NW Quadrant of Arapaho and Montfort) in Addison.

Which companies ARE in that OTHER market for YOU?

One of the most important skills a job-seeker can learn during a job-search is ONLINE RESEARCH skills. Make the commitment to improve your research skills. In fact, hold yourself accountable to research time each and every week. Employers value job-seekers who know key information about the company because that knowledge demonstrates your interest and enthusiasm for the company and for the job.

Finding information on a company’s competitors, company financial stresses and major lawsuits can counterbalance the positive information portrayed by the company’s own website, the most positive view of available information…

WHEN to Do Research

First and foremost should be your commitment to knowing your marketplace for the rest of your career. This FIRST LEVEL RESEARCH implies setting aside a reasonable amount of time on an on-going basis, whether you’re employed or not. Second, and another permutation of First Level Research, is when you are just starting a specific job-search and looking to identify attractive trends or key companies in your profession or industry, or even in a specific geographic location.

The third possibility is when you are applying to a specific employer; it’s always best to relate yourself to the company and tailor your cover letter and resume to each employer. This SECOND LEVEL RESEARCH probes deeper for specific info.

The fourth — and when most job-seekers finally do some research — is when you have been invited to a job interview; you’ll want to showcase your knowledge of the company and the people interviewing you. This THIRD LEVEL RESEARCH probes still deeper and extends the breadth of your knowledge.

The sooner you get started, the better off you’ll be. Remember, both objective (factual) and subjective (word-of-mouth, opinions) information can be of value. A simple, two-line “OFFER CRITERIA MATRIX” will help you keep this all straight…

The Matrix will serve you well in all three levels of research mentioned previously… and when completely “filled in” can put the objectivity back in to the emotional process of accepting your next position, or taking the next step.

This week Thursday, January 17, we will overview the entire 12-step process, answering your questions and concerns at each step of the way… this is a great place to start for new-comers as the other Core Topics will follow in sequence.

STAY POSITIVE as you ramp up your efforts in The New Year

In this week’s FREE workshop at The Egg and I Restaurant in Addison, DFWCareerpilot, we will focus on ramping up your job seeking efforts in this New Year… for many, that involves a little “attitude adjustment…”

  1. Maintain ‘normal’ routine: The human body and its condition tends to fight change.  Don’t get into the bad habits of waking up late, ‘power naps’ in the afternoons or paying too much  attention to your ‘honey do list’ around the house and other distractions. Get up at your normal time, eat right and get some exercise (Walk your dog a mile a day whether you have a dog or not!).
  2. Stay current with what’s happening in your industry and chosen profession: Don’t let yourself fall behind just because you’re not working. The best approach is regular ‘market research’ of your industry and chosen profession as a regular component of your Personal Marketing Plan.  Not only will you be giving yourself useful new information—trends and opportunities—but also access to new contacts.  A very powerful by-product of this research is that you will be ahead of your competition when it comes time to interview.
  3. Positive thinking:  Let your research draw your mind to future possibilities rather than past  negative assumptions – you need to be able to bounce back. Concentrate on the skills and knowledge you have and how they may best be applied moving forward. Sitting around with a “woe is me” attitude is only going to further depress you.  Your closest in ‘support group’ is your best ally, here.  It may seem obvious, but… Avoid negative people: Network with employed people instead of your unemployed colleagues!

Learn to Embrace The OTHER Job Market with DFWCareerpilot.  Attend this Thursday’s Meeting and bring a guest!  Better still, SHARE THIS POST with your network both in person and through LinkedIn.

THINK POSITIVE…

  1. Volunteer: You can do this at a church, hospital, homeless shelter or non-profit organization… will open your eyes to people who are less off than you and give you a sense of contribution. There is no greater reward than helping people who are less fortunate than us.
  2. Manage your expectations: Not every job you apply for will be a success. Don’t be put off by this. Instead, concentrate on the positives and look at what you achieve each day.
  3. Don’t give up!  Jobs don’t find you unless you embrace and help out The OTHER Job Market… In a more traditional search–you find them!

KEEP LinkedIN ‘On Your Plate’ For The Rest Of Your Career, BUT…

Keep your LinkedIn Account ‘on your plate’ for the rest of your career, but never let this, or any other technology, replace your more inter-active (face2face and toe2toe) relationship-building role!  This week’s DFWCAREERPILOT Workshop, Thursday, Dec 6th explores developing your network on LinkedIn… your LinkedIn Task #2.

Your LinkedIn Account is a marvelous TOOL… and like any good tool, you must commit to maintaining it so it serves you well for years to come.  In this context, your LinkedIn Task #1 is to properly maintain your PROFILE:

  1. Keep your Profile optimized to 100%… During active job search you want to be found!  Make sure your Profile is always in synch with your ever changing resume template.  In fact, while your headline may ‘brand’ you, it is your EXPERIENCE that sells you and helps to optimize your page ranking in order to be found.
  2. Extend your ‘reach’ by regular networking activity… During active job search, pay attention to your chosen groups’ DISCUSSION Boards and participate often… utilize the varied functions/applications in your Account in order to “ALWAYS HAVE A NEXT CONTACT TO INITIATE… for the rest of your career.
  3. WHEN EMPLOYED… pay particular attention to your current job and projects.  Be LESS available while always being open to ‘next steps’ and other opportunity within your career.

Pay constant attention to the development of your network, your LinkedIn Task #2… utilize the varied functions/applications in your Account in order to “ALWAYS HAVE A NEXT CONTACT TO INITIATE… for the rest of your career:

  1. Pay particular attention to your ‘first line connections’ …because you want them to be a reliable source of information and referral activity.  Accept invitations from people you know and regularly reach out to connect with people you meet…
  2. Utilize your ‘shared connections’ to key people in your second line …Your LinkedIn network can be your ‘roadmap’ to identify and secure key contacts out there in the ‘sea of unwashed faces.’
  3. WHEN EMPLOYED … be mindful of active search activity.  Protect your privacy and confidentiality.
