THIS WEEK’s Workshop: LinkedIn Task #1…Thursday, May 23rd @ 9 AM at The Egg and I

Please SHARE this Post with a friend or two that you think may benefit from the information and interaction…Thursday, May 23rd,  we’ll focus on TASK#1 in your LinkedIn account… Your personal profile.  Your LinkedIn Profile is as integral to your career transition success as your execution of a PERSONAL Marketing Plan.  The two work together to create the interactive foundation of your networking efforts.

And what about this ‘new’ ENDORSEMENT Feature?

1. LinkedIn endorsements are here to stay. Introduced on Sept. 24, 2012, endorsements are fast becoming a popular feature. Since the launch, more than 200 million endorsements have been issued. Users are making roughly 10 million endorsements a day.

2. Only first-degree connections can endorse you. If it seems that your endorsements are coming from people with whom you’re barely in touch, that’s because you have expanded your connections to include people you don’t know well. The fact is that most of us have first-degree connections with some people who don’t directly know our work—family, friends, colleagues or former colleagues outside our department. So prepare yourself for endorsements that seem like they are out of left field.

3. You can, and should, hide some endorsements. It’s not possible to delete an endorsement but you can hide it so that no one but you can see it. Go to the pull-down menu at the top of the screen and under “profile,” click “edit profile.” When you scroll to the “skills and expertise” section, you will see a pencil icon. Click that and you will see an option to “manage endorsements.”

THIS THURSDAY’s Workshop: Achieving CareerFIT…Thursday, May 16th at 9AM @ The Egg and I Restaurant in Addison

Just what IS a good CareerFIT for you?

To achieve a good “fit” between you and any future opportunity, you have to ask yourself some basic questions about yourself and your prospective employers. The fit depends on how well the jobs meets your needs and how well your skills and abilities meet the employer’s needs. The employer will make a decision and extend an offer to you: now it is time for you to make your decision.

Write out the factors that are important to you in a job… actually write out your list.  During your career transition, learn the value of setting your offer criteria, a key element of your Personal Market Plan:

  1. Creates an objective target for your efforts ahead;
  2. Gives you a meaningful set of questions to ask during research and networking;
  3. Provides an objective way to analyze and react to offers as they occur.

To manage your career wisely has you extending the same concept.  Consider some of the factors listed below … Examine each factor through the questions listed – and then ask, “does this opportunity fit me?”

Work Requirements and Expectations: What is the next  appropriate work for you? Is the work process or project oriented?  If it’s process oriented, are the requirements and expectations clear?  What kinds of projects will you work on? Will you work on one project at a time, or multiple projects? Are the projects long term or short term? Will you work on a project long enough to see the end result? Is it important to you to be able to see the project as a whole, including the result? Or will you be content to do the work without a big picture understanding?

Work Environment: Will the work space be a source of comfort and confidence for you? How formal or informal is the environment? Hectic, fast paced? Will you have the opportunity to have flex time, or to tele-commute? How many hours a week does the employer expect you to work? Will you have the freedom to wear casual clothes? What is a typical day like at the company you are considering?  Would they allow a “trial visit” or at least a site visit?

Career Path: Is there a defined succession plan? What position(s) can you move to next? How long do new hires generally stay in the same job? How quickly do people get promoted? Are your opportunities for professional development well defined and available to you? Are mentors available?

Training and Personal Development: what kind of training will you get from the employer to do the job? What kind of training will you get to stay current in your area of interest? Are the answers to these two questions different? Does it matter to you if the answers are different?

This week Thursday, May 16th, we will focus on a strategic, more career-oriented, definition of FIT,  answering your questions and concerns at each step of the way… we’ll also get in to collateral development: resumes, correspondence, etc

This is a great place to start for new-comers as the other Core Topics will follow in sequence… THIS WEEK’s Workshop…  Achieving CareerFIT brings focus to those elusive decisions regarding positioning and targeting your efforts.  The first five steps of the 12 step process, from assessment to beginning the evolution of your LinkedIn Profile, will be discussed.

Please SHARE THIS POST with your network… and let me know you’re planning to attend by filling out this quick RSVP… THX

TOMORROW’s Workshop: LinkedIn Task #2…Thursday, February 14th @ 9 AM at The Egg and I Restaurant in Addison (NW Quadrant of Arapaho and Montfort, 1 blk east of Tollway)

Please SHARE this Post with a friend or two that you think may benefit from the information and interaction… Thursday, February 14th we’ll focus on TASK#2 utilizing your LinkedIn account… Developing your personal contact network.  We will have a guest c0-facilitator, Bill Fenson, a Job Search Specialist with the Wounded Warriors Program.

We ALL leave ‘digital dirt’ out on the Internet… what are YOU doing about it?

While times have certainly changed for most business functions, what with TQM, CPI, et al… it seems that the HR and recruiting departments are stuck in a time warp of sorts… they didn’t ‘get IT’ then, nor are they doing a much better job today. Recruiting the ‘right talent’ is at least as difficult as identifying and securing a job seeker’s next appropriate work—a good careerFIT for both parties.

While the ‘technology of job search and recruitment’ has changed (note: I did not say ‘improved’) considerably during the last generation or two…

Both sides of the ‘hiring equation’ still make excuses.  Companies still post boring jobs, hoping to find exceptional people where no one else looked before. Presentation is still more important than performance. Techies still overvalue experience and technical skills. Managers still over trust their ‘gut.’ And everyone still gets seduced by first impressions…

…Not to mention digital screening tactics.

The screening process, mired down by KEYWORD filters, still precludes people who have great ability, but without the so-called “proper” background or requisite years of experience to be considered. In our rush to hire at scale we still ignore the needs of those being hired and how they make decisions. Fulfilling needs has been replaced with expediency.

It’s surprising that HR still relies on the dogma of hiring practices 100 years old, and still believes that a 62% interviewing accuracy rate is acceptable. Despite their voiced desire for improvement, many still blame the government or their legal department as reasons for maintaining the status quo.

So why haven’t things gotten better for both the recruiters and the recruited?

 Who should attend Thursday’s workshop?

  1. Those who might ask… HOW do I get more benefit from my ‘digital footprint?’
  2. Those seeking a systematic, focused, more predictable way to perform well in their job search;
  3. “Regulars” who need a ‘booster shot.’… and bring a guest;
